Jodhpur, India

Out of the blue, by Roy del Vecchio, a teacher from Amsterdam, was traveling in Rajasthan for a month.

I took this picture during Diwali in the blue city, Jodhpur. In this festival, people light candles in their houses and yards, and on every street corner children light firework bombs. In the narrow streets of Jodhpur, the effect is sometimes like you’re in a war! I was happy to be invited for tea with a local family one evening. They lived in a beautiful blue haveli, a multi-storey mansion with an open courtyard that’s used as a cooking area. Here, the grandmother of the house sat with her granddaughter. It was pleasant sitting there, with neighbours coming and going, wishing each other ‘Happy Diwali’. The evening ended on  a rooftop terrace with stunning views over the city – and more fireworks.
