Chicago is the spiritual home of the skyscraper, but for up-and-coming giants, look east. The US has 28 buildings in the top 100, mainland Chinahas 22 with more on the way. In the UK, One CanadaSquare (236 metres) has been our tallest buildings since 1991, but the shard at LondonBridge should overtake it when it reaches 306 metres in 2012.
